Second firefighter killed in line-of-duty this week

The Chicago Fire Department responded after flames broke out in a high-rise building at 1212 North Lake Shore Drive Wednesday morning. While there, the CFD called for a mayday and an emergency medical response after one firefighter suffered critical injuries and later died.

One person is dead and multiple people are injured after a fire broke out on the 15th floor of a Kenwood high-rise building Wednesday morning.

The man was removed from the building just before noon Thursday and was being rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center in grave condition, Chicago Fire Department officials said. He was later pronounced dead.

Chicago police and firefighters swarmed City Hall for several hours Friday during a training that aimed to “enhance preparedness and strengthen capabilities” across city departments “during and following an active threat or terrorism.”

The Chicago Fire Department confirmed Friday that one male victim, who had suffered “extensive" burns in the blast, died from his injuries.

The fire department tweeted the explosion occurred at West End and North Central avenues sometime Tuesday morning. At least eight people have been hospitalized, with three in "serious to critical" condition.

A witness to the crash told WTTW News the man was a cyclist riding on an e-bike. The Chicago Fire Department confirmed a man in 40s was struck near Milwaukee Avenue and Morgan Street in River West and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious to critical condition, though the department described him as a motorcyclist.
