The budget marks the first under CPS CEO Pedro Martinez. Beyond the funding for new teaching spots, the district said its budget for the 2022-23 school year includes $290 million in new investments, including $45 million to build instructional capacity at schools.

“Principals, teachers and school staff members have worked so hard supporting students and families and building relationships amid the challenges we have faced together,” Martinez said in a statement Friday. “This year’s school budgets prioritize support for core instruction to improve the classroom experience and set a new standard of excellence.”

Those investments include: $50 million to help small declining-enrollment schools cover priority needs, $6 million to add 53 new school counselors and $5 million to “provide stability” at schools with the largest enrollment losses.

Despite that spending, the district reportedly informed many schools they will be seeing budget cuts next year. WBEZ reported Friday that 40% of schools will see funding reductions due to declining enrollment.

District enrollment dropped to approximately 330,000 students this school year, a decline of around 10,000 students from the previous school year.

In its new budget, CPS said it will also spend $3 million to increase bilingual education funding for teachers and $2 million to fund 23 new positions that will support students in temporary living situations.

The district said it will also provide teachers with two additional days of professional development.

CPS will release its capital budget and overall 2023 District budget later this year.
