The Last Word: Chrystal Whitfield

The Last Word: Chrystal Whitfield

At long last, it feels like summer has arrived in Chicago, and for many people that means it’s time to spruce up the garden. But registered nurse Chrystal Whitfield says when it comes to gardening, not all communities have the space, time, money and know-how it takes. That’s why she started the 69th and Stewart Block Club garden in Englewood.

As part of our series The Last Word, Whitfield talks about the power of learning how to grow food and flowers in community gardens, and how it can both feed people and heal them in body and spirit.
