4 Reconstructed CTA Red Line Stops in Uptown, Edgewater Set to Open Next Month

Four reconstructed, fully accessible CTA Red Line stops in the Uptown and Edgewater neighborhoods are set to reopen next month, Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office announced Wednesday.
The stations, located at Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn and Bryn Mawr, will open to the public beginning July 20. City officials said this will mark the largest simultaneous opening of stations since the Orange Line opened in 1993.
The reconstructions were part of the city’s $2.1 billion Red and Purple Modernization (RPM) Phase One Project.
“The Red Line is the backbone of our City and is critical to our economic vibrancy, which is why I am proud to support investments like RPM and the future Red Line Extension Project on the Far South Side,” Johnson said in a statement.
The four stations will be located at:
- Lawrence: 1120 W. Lawrence Ave.
- Argyle: 1118 W. Argyle St.
- Berwyn: 1119 W. Berwyn St.
- Bryn Mawr: 1116 W. Bryn Mawr Ave.; additional Hollywood entrance: 1119 W. Hollywood Ave.
When these stations open, temporary CTA stops at Argyle and Bryn Mawr that currently serve customers during construction will close.
Station amenities at the reopened locations will include elevators and escalators, wider platforms, large translucent overhead canopies to protect passengers from rain and inclement weather, and platform benches.
“By opening these four stations that will be accessible to customers with disabilities, we move closer to our goal of having all of our CTA stations fully accessible,” CTA acting President Nora Leerhsen said in a statement.
According to the city, the elevated track structure and signal system built along the Lawrence-to-Bryn Mawr corridor replaced century-old, deteriorated structures. Following the demolition of a 1.3-mile concrete embankment wall, the city intends to develop open space under the new Red and Purple Line tracks that will include a pedestrian trail, dog parks, playground, fitness area, benches and flexible-use plaza space for community events.
Construction is expected to begin next year and be completed in 2027.
