At least five people were injured after a school bus overturned on the Dan Ryan Expressway Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Chicago Fire Department, the victims were all transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the bus refused medical assistance.
The crash occurred on the inbound Dan Ryan in the area of 38th Street.
Michael Howard was driving behind the bus and watched as it began to fishtail on the road.
“By the time I slowed down and pulled to the right, he had ran up on the curb and flipped over,” Howard told WTTW News.
Howard said he and two other vehicles pulled over and attempted to help the passengers get out of the bus. He ran to the bus’ escape hatch to see if he could help anyone out, but the passengers were already making their way out through a rear door.

According to Howard, the passengers mostly appeared to be teens, and at least two of them appeared to be in serious pain. He said he remained on scene until a state trooper arrived and other emergency personnel were nearby.
“(I’m) thankful that it wasn't a bus full of children and the damage to the bus wasn't enough to keep people from helping,” Howard said. “I just hope and pray that everybody is fine.”
Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communication was instructing drivers to seek alternate routes and avoid the area, but just after 3:30 p.m., the office indicated all lanes had reopened.
This is a developing story.
