Advocates Call for City Support to Shelter Homeless Amid Winter Storm, Pandemic


Chicago’s homeless population is braving through another wave of snowfall tonight.

Outreach workers in Chicago are making efforts to provide supplies and shelter to the homeless community. Advocates are calling on the city for support as shelters deal with limited bed capacity in the pandemic.

“Major challenges we are facing are due to the pandemic,” said Sam Guardino, a homeless outreach program director at Thresholds. “People who provide shelter to those experiencing homelessness, most had to decrease their capacity in order to meet social distancing norms and protocols.”

Guardino joined Jose Muñoz, executive director at La Casa Norte, to discuss the situation at housing centers and organizations and the challenges the pandemic has brought on homeless individuals.
