In past years, the contest was limited to brick bungalows, but now owners of all styles of bungalow — frame, stucco, etc. — can enter. At stake is a $500 cash prize in each of three categories: front garden, rear/side garden and window/planter boxes.

The contest is open to CBA members; bungalow owners who are not yet members can join the group for free. Five randomly selected entrants will receive a free rain barrel.

Submissions are open through July 6. Ten finalists in each category will be chosen by CBA staff and then put to a popular vote online July 9-14. Winners will be announced July 26.

According to CBA, native gardens have become increasingly popular among entrants, but regardless of style, a common theme has been the notion of gardens providing an oasis from urban life.

For the second year, CBA will donate $25 to South and West side community gardens for every eligible contest entry received. In 2020, that translated into a total of $3,000 donated to six community gardens.
