Described as a cross between a cat and a teddy bear, the Olinguito was part of the museum's collection for decades, but was announced on Aug. 15, 2013, after being noticed and distinguished by mammalogist Kristofer Helgen from the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

The Olinguito has been spotted in Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia. The Field Museum's mammals collections manager Bill Stanley brings the specimen to our studios.
