Motorists should stay alert for pavement failures amid a heat wave impacting residents across the state, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.

Pavement failures, buckling and blowouts can occur with little warning during periods of prolonged heat and humidity, resulting in uneven driving surfaces, according to IDOT.

“While it’s impossible to predict where or when these failures might occur, maintenance personnel will be monitoring road conditions and on standby to make repairs as quickly as possible when they are observed and reported,” according to an IDOT news release.

The department is also cautioning the public to stay alert and move over for workers and other emergency personnel when repairs are being made.

Pavement failures can be reported to IDOT by calling 800-452-4368 or reported to law enforcement by calling 911, according to a news release.

The Chicago area is under an extreme heat warning, with dangerous hot and humid conditions that could feel like 100 to 110 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
