A Chicago police officer shot and killed a person Tuesday night in West Ridge after a car dragged an officer, department officials said.

The officer, who suffered minor injuries, was taken to the hospital after the incident that began at 10:25 p.m. Tuesday, according to a Chicago Police Department statement.

A woman in the car with the man who was shot was detained by police, and two guns were recovered from the car, officials said. The woman, who has not been charged with a crime, was not identified.

The shooting is under investigation by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, officials said. The person who was killed has not been identified by authorities.

The incident began when a tactical team of officers assigned to a Lincoln (20th) Police District were investigating “a stolen sedan that was parked and unoccupied” in the 5700 block of North Washtenaw Avenue, officials said.

It was not clear what evidence officers had that the car was stolen, or what prompted the investigation.

“As officers watched, dark colored sedan, occupied by two adult males and one adult female, pulled alongside the stolen vehicle,” according to the statement. “The two adult males approached the stolen vehicle, and attempted to enter it, at which time the tactical officers approached to investigate. As officers approached, one adult male fled on foot while the other returned to the driver’s side of the sedan.”

Officers ordered the man now sitting in the driver’s seat to get out of the car, according to the statement.

“He refused, and a struggle ensued,” according to the statement. “Officers attempted to remove the driver, at which time the driver accelerated, dragging an officer. The officer discharged their duty weapon once, striking the offender at which time the vehicle collided with an unoccupied parked vehicle.”

The officer shot the man in the head, killing him, according to the statement.

The officers involved will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days, in accordance with department policy.

The shooting is the second police shooting in three days. A Chicago police officer shot and injured two people early Sunday morning in Morgan Park after an officer attempting to break up a brawl was shot, officials said.

CPD officers have shot 22 people, killing nine, since the start of the year, records show. In 2024, CPD officers shot 12 people, killing six, records show.
