The National Weather Service is warning of an ongoing threat for flash flooding in the Chicago region through Saturday, close on the heels of heavy rainfalls earlier in the week that saw a month's worth of rain dumped on some parts of the city in less than two hours.

Friday's forecast calls for thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, some likely to be strong or severe. The precipitation adds to the several inches of rain that fell Tuesday night and another 1 to 2 inches recorded Thursday at rain gauges across Chicago. The official weather station at O'Hare Airport measured 1.2 inches of precipitation.

Flash flooding could occur, the weather service said, particularly in areas still saturated from previous deluges.

More storms and the potential for flash floods are possible again Saturday before drier conditions return on Sunday.

Motorists who come across flooded roads and viaducts should turn around instead of attempting to drive through the water, the weather service said.

On Tuesday night, there were several reports of people in need of rescue from cars trapped in flooded streets.

Frustration is mounting among residents of Chicago's West Side, where many are still recovering from flooding in 2023 that led to a disaster declaration.
