1 Killed, 1 Wounded in Shooting on CTA Train in Downtown Chicago
(WTTW News)
One man was fatally shot and a second was wounded during an altercation on board a downtown CTA train early Tuesday morning.
According to the Chicago Police Department, a 44-year-old man was killed in a shooting just before 1:30 a.m. in the 100 block of North Wells.
Police said the victim and another man were riding on a train when they became involved in a verbal altercation with another man who was carrying a knife.
The men then got into a physical fight when one of the victims produced a firearm. Police said the knife-wielding man then grabbed the gun and fired, striking both victims.
The 44-year-old was shot in the abdomen and later died of his injuries at a local hospital. The second victim, a 23-year-old man, was struck in the wrist and was hospitalized in fair condition.
No other injuries were reported and the suspect fled the scene.
The shooting comes as federal authorities are threatening to withhold as much as $50 million in funding to the CTA unless Chicago officials bolster their safety efforts on city train and bus lines.
The CTA said CPD announced plans last week to deploy dozens more officers to patrol the transit system, increasing the daily average from 77 officers up to 120 officers. Additional private security canines will also be deployed.
