Heat indices around Chicago are set to top 100 degrees Monday as a stretch of extreme summer temperatures continues, officials said.

According to the National Weather Service, oppressive levels of heat and humidity will stick around through Monday afternoon, with highs expected in the mid 90s and heat indices topping out at 105 degrees.

The heat wave that began over the weekend already produced heat indices of 106 degrees Saturday and similar temperatures throughout the day Sunday, according to the NWS. Both days saw low temperatures at Chicago O’Hare hovering around the 80-degree mark, which set records for those dates.

Those conditions make it dangerous for anyone to be outside for extended periods without proper hydration or adequate cooling, officials said. The NWS suggests wearing light clothing, staying in air-conditioned areas and avoiding outdoor activities if possible.

Summer-like heat and humidity are expected to continue throughout the week, according to NWS forecasts, but the highest heat indices are expected to be south of Chicago after Monday.

Chicago has opened more than 250 cooling centers through Tuesday.
