A band of dry air crashed Chicago’s snowstorm party Wednesday and, depending on your point of view, either spoiled all the fun or made for a better-than-expected evening commute.

A total of 2.8 inches of snowfall was recorded at O’Hare Airport, falling short of the 4 to 6 inches that had been predicted. Areas outside of the “dry slot,” which meteorologists began tracking Wednesday afternoon (see graphic), came closer to tallying the forecasted accumulation, with 4.5 inches reported in Gurnee and 6 inches in Winthrop Harbor.
