Police oversight officials are investigating after a man who was with two off-duty officers was seriously wounded in a South Austin shooting early Saturday morning.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability said it is investigating an “off-duty officer involved incident” after a 26-year-old man was struck during an exchange of gunfire in the 1000 block of South Mayfield Avenue.

According to Chicago police, that man was inside a vehicle in that area at around 1:30 a.m. with four other individuals, two of whom were off-duty police officers.

When the man exited the vehicle, someone inside another vehicle began shooting in their direction. Police said someone also fired a weapon from inside the victim’s vehicle toward the shooter, but it was not immediately clear who fired those shots.

The 26-year-old was the only person struck during the shooting, and was hospitalized in serious condition. Neither off-duty officer was wounded

“The specifics of this incident are under investigation at this time,” according to the CPD.
