Chicago Extends Street Sweeping Season a Week, to Friday After Thanksgiving

Chicago’s Department of Streets and Sanitation has extended its street sweeping season by a week.

The last pass of sweepers was originally scheduled for Nov. 22, but the season will now end on Nov. 29, the Friday after Thanksgiving, according to a department spokeswoman.

The extension is citywide, the spokeswoman added.

“No parking” signage will be posted on affected streets but because the added sweeping wasn’t on the original schedule, citations won’t be issued, she said. The season began April 1.

Street sweeping equipment, which clears gutters of debris and litter, is not designed for leaf pickup, so Chicagoans shouldn’t push piles of leaves from their lawn to the curb.
