Johnson had planned to be in attendance at Martinez’s funeral Monday, but changed course Saturday, saying he’d “heard from the family and am honoring their request.”

“This has been an emotional two weeks for the loved ones of Officer Martinez, the Chicago Police Department, and the city of Chicago,” Johnson said in a statement. “We all want to do right by Officer Martinez and give his family and the CPD family space to grieve.”

Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara in a video posted this week said Martinez’s family “has been very clear” that they did not wish for Johnson or Gov. JB Pritzker to attend Monday’s services.

While Pritzker has said he would not be going to the funeral, Catanzara criticized Johnson for not following the family’s wishes, comparing the situation to the April funeral of Officer Luis Huesca, whose family similarly asked that Johnson stay away.

“Here we are again with another fallen hero, another funeral and another family who has been very clear they do not want the governor or the mayor to attend,” Catanzara said in the video.

Martinez was fatally shot during a Nov. 4 traffic stop in the East Chatham neighborhood. Darion McMillian has since been charged with his murder.

McMillian, who is a convicted felon, allegedly shot and killed Martinez and another passenger in his vehicle after being released on electronic monitoring by a Will County judge. He is currently being detained pending trial.

Martinez’s funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel.
