A 26-year-old Chicago police officer and another man were killed following a traffic stop Monday night in the East Chatham neighborhood.
The officer, Enrique Martinez, was identified through Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office records. He would have been on the job for three years in December, according to Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling.
“He was a proud individual, very hard working, and he gave his life for this city,” Snelling said late Monday.
The shooting occurred at around 8 p.m. Monday in the 800 block of South Ingleside where officers had pulled over a vehicle with three occupants inside. One of those occupants then opened fire — Snelling said it appeared this was “rapid fire” — and the officer was struck multiple times.
He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
“The wounds were too great for this officer to recover,” Snelling said.
One vehicle occupant was also struck and killed. According to Snelling, the alleged shooter attempted to flee in the vehicle, striking another officer, then tried to run away on foot. That officer was hospitalized in fair condition.
The third person in the vehicle was arrested on scene and the alleged shooter was located and arrested a short time later. Snelling said that man was in possession of a handgun and police recovered another firearm that contained an extended magazine.
One officer discharged his weapon on scene, according to Snelling. While the shooting remains under investigation, he said it’s “more than likely” the second man killed had been struck by shots fired by the occupant inside the vehicle rather than police.
“Tonight the city of Chicago, we grieve and mourn the tragic loss of one of our brave, a member of the Chicago Police Department,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said. “This young officer courageously protected this city. As the family continues to grieve — the shock, the anger that they are feeling — I’m calling on all residents of this city to pray for this family.”
