What’s left of Hurricane Helene — a monster Category 4 storm at its peak — is now spinning toward Chicago, bringing gusty winds and intermittent rain and creating dangerous conditions on southern Lake Michigan.
The National Weather Service is forecasting the worst to hit late Friday afternoon. Expect strong wind gusts from the northeast, reaching 45 to 55 miles per hour.
Winds could cause tree damage and power outages and will make for hazardous travel on west-to-east roads.
While the weekend won’t be a washout, chances for rain will increase Friday night into Saturday morning, according to the weather service.
The strong winds will create large waves on Lake Michigan — up to 7- to 10-feet high — leading to “potentially life-threatening conditions” from late Friday afternoon into early Saturday, the weather service said.
People should avoid lakeshore trails, piers and docks to avoid getting swept into the water.
