Of all the images of Chicago that have been presented to the world this week during the Democratic National Convention — the pizza and hot dogs, the “L,” Wrigley Field, the Bean, skyscrapers — the city’s green spaces haven’t necessarily been front and center.
Here’s one natural area that’s been right under conventioneers’ noses the whole time: the McCormick Bird Sanctuary.
Part of the Burnham Wildlife Corridor, which stretches for 100 acres along the south lakefront, the bird sanctuary is tucked away off the lakefront path, just south of McCormick Place Lakeside Center.
Built on top of an underground parking garage, the nine-acre sanctuary is one of the many reasons Chicago truly is a city in a garden.
