According to the Chicago Police Department, 48 people were shot in separate incidents between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday, marking one of the most violent weekends in the city so far this year.

Those victims included Ariana Molina, the young girl who was killed in a mass shooting that left 10 others injured in the 2000 block of West 52nd Street.

“We are all allowed to be outraged today — a warm, spring day that I am sure this child would have been enjoying with family,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement. “I am praying for her loved ones and her community as they experience the unimaginable pain of losing a child.”

Three more children and seven adults were injured in what Johnson called a “horrific shooting.”

Department Deputy Chief Don Jerome told reporters Saturday that the Back of the Yards assault happened when shots were fired at a crowd standing outside a family gathering around 9 p.m. Police believe the attack was not a “random act of violence,” but was instead likely gang-related

Elsewhere, a 29-year-old man was fatally shot in the 2600 block of North Sawyer Avenue at around 6:30 a.m. Saturday. Police said the victim was struck multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 20-year-old man was killed in the 7700 block of South Union Avenue just after 5:15 p.m. Saturday. He was standing on the sidewalk when two unknown men opened fire from down the street before fleeing in a silver vehicle. The victim was rushed to a local hospital where he later died.

At around that same time, officers discovered a 22-year-old man who had been shot in the 7700 block of South Carpenter Street. He had been struck multiple times and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

A 21-year-old woman was killed and a 15-year-old girl was injured after they were shot just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the 9300 block of South Bishop Street. According to police, a known woman approached the pair following an argument and pepper sprayed them as they sat in a vehicle. The victims attempted to flee and drove a short distance before the woman approached and opened fire into the vehicle.

The 15-year-old victim was struck in the chest and hospitalized in critical condition, while the 21-year-old was struck in the head and died.

Two men were shot, one fatally, in the 4800 block of West Arthington Street just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday. They were standing with a group outside when someone opened fire. A 30-year-old man was killed and a 36-year-old was hospitalized in good condition.

A 23-year-old man was fatally shot in the 3500 block of West Harrison Street at around midnight Sunday morning. He was struck four times and was later pronounced dead.
