Cook County Prosecutors Drop Murder Charges Against Chicago Woman, Son in Fatal Restaurant Shooting

Cook County prosecutors have dropped murder charges against a Chicago woman and her son, just days after she was accused of ordering her son to fatally shoot a man at a West Pullman restaurant this month.
A spokesperson for the Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s office confirmed it had dropped first-degree murder and contributing to the delinquency of a minor charges against Carlishia Hood.
Hood’s son — whose name has not been released because he is a juvenile — was also arrested on a first-degree murder charge, which has since been dismissed as well.
Foxx’s office said that decision was made “based upon our continued review and in light of emerging evidence.”
“Based upon the facts, evidence, and the law we are unable to meet our burden of proof in the prosecution of these cases,” officials with the State’s Attorney’s Office said in a statement Monday.
The dismissal also comes after a video of a portion of the confrontation inside the restaurant was widely shared on social media. The video does not show the shooting, but does appear to show Brown punching Hood.
Hood had been accused of ordering her 14-year-old son to fatally shoot 32-year-old Jeremy Brown following an altercation at the Maxwell Street Express restaurant in the 11600 block of South Halsted Street.
During a bond hearing last week, an assistant state’s attorney said Hood and her son were at the restaurant at around 11 p.m. on June 18, and while inside, Hood and Brown got into a verbal altercation.
Brown then began punching Hood, at which point the 14-year-old boy entered the restaurant, pulled a firearm from his hoodie pocket and fired at Brown, prosecutors said at the time, striking him in the back.
Brown fled the restaurant, but last week prosecutors said Hood yelled at her son to kill Brown as the teen pursued Brown and fired additional shots at him.
Hood had been ordered held on a $3 million D-bond during that hearing.
