Chicago will dodge the worst of a storm system whose track has stymied meteorologists as it approached the region.
The latest forecast issued from the National Weather Service predicts little if any snow accumulation in Chicago. Northwest Indiana is a different story, though. Some areas could see intense periods of snowfall, with totals of 6 to 8 inches possible, accompanied by strong wind gusts.
Anyone hitting the road and heading south or east into the heart of the storm should expect a “difficult to crippling commute” in the late afternoon and early evening hours, forecasters said.
Whatever snow does fall won’t stick around for long. Temperatures will be in the 40s over the weekend.
Here’s the updated forecast:

Accumulations today will depend on the snowfall rate due to temperatures near or just above freezing at the surface. Expect a sharper snowfall gradient than depicted, especially on the northwest side. Slight shifts in the heaviest snowfall axis are still possible! pic.twitter.com/ktfAG6Fy7l
