In a preliminary statement, Chicago Police Department officials said it doesn't appear anyone was struck by gunfire during the shooting, which occurred around 7 a.m. Tuesday in the 1800 block of North Monticello Avenue.

According to the department’s statement, on-duty officers assigned to the detached services unit observed a robbery in progress and encountered multiple suspects, at least one of whom was armed.

At that point, “an exchange of gunfire ensued,” police said, and the suspects fled the scene. No firearms have been recovered. While there are no reports of anyone being shot, the CPD said one officer was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.

CPD spokesperson Thomas Ahern later confirmed to WTTW News in an email that the officers involved in the shooting were members of Lightfoot’s security detail.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the incident and any officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.
