A "brazen gunman" fired dozens of rounds at the car of the woman and a 42-year-old man as the two "were trying to flee for their lives," Police Superintendent David Brown told reporters at a press conference Monday.

As they were being chased and shot at, the pair pulled into the police station in the 1900 block of West Monterey Avenue. The woman was struck in the head and killed. The man suffered a graze wound to the lower body and was hospitalized in good condition, according to police.

"Violent criminals feel empowered," Brown said. "It is shocking that a police district is not a safe place."

A total of 35 people were shot, nine of whom died, in 29 separate shooting incidents across the city of Chicago, between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

A 65-year-old man was fatally shot just after 7 p.m. Friday in the 400 block of North Hamlin Avenue. Police said the victim was near the front of a residence when he was struck in the chest by gunfire. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition but later died.

A 50-year-old man was killed at around 9:30 p.m. Friday when he was shot inside a restaurant in the 2700 block of West Division Street. The offender shot from outside the restaurant through a window, striking the victim in the neck. He was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.

An 18-year-old man died after he was shot while standing outside a home in the 500 block of West 87th Street at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body and head, and was found by a resident who had heard a loud noise.

A 26-year-old man was found dead in the 2900 block of South Popular Avenue just before 3 a.m. Saturday. He had been shot once in the head, but police did not immediately know the circumstances of the shooting.

Two men were killed in a shooting Saturday afternoon in the 8300 block of South Paxton Avenue. One victim, a 32-year-old, was shot in the back, torso and pelvis. A second victim, who was between the ages of 25 and 30, was struck in his leg, arm, chest and head.

Just after 2 a.m. Sunday, a man was discovered with a gunshot wound to his neck in the 4900 block of West Superior Street. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, where he later died of his injuries.
