Nine people were shot to death in Chicago over a weekend, including a 46-year-old woman who was killed early Sunday evening while seeking safety at police station in the Morgan Park neighborhood, police said.
A "brazen gunman" fired dozens of rounds at the car of the woman and a 42-year-old man as the two "were trying to flee for their lives," Police Superintendent David Brown told reporters at a press conference Monday.
As they were being chased and shot at, the pair pulled into the police station in the 1900 block of West Monterey Avenue. The woman was struck in the head and killed. The man suffered a graze wound to the lower body and was hospitalized in good condition, according to police.
"Violent criminals feel empowered," Brown said. "It is shocking that a police district is not a safe place."
