Candidate Forum: Democratic Secretary of State Candidates Anna Valencia, David Moore Square Off

The Illinois Secretary of State’s office is the state agency that perhaps has the most interaction with residents on a day-to-day basis.

Most Illinoisians have been in a Driver Services facility to renew their license or deal with an auto title.

The office manages 4,000 employees and carries out other important functions like managing the disclosure of state lobbyists and the registration of all entities doing business in the state.

The post has been helmed for 24 years by the popular Jesse White, who is retiring at the end of his sixth term in office.

Chicago City Clerk Anna Valencia and Ald. David Moore (17th Ward) are among four Democratic candidates vying to fill his seat.

“Chicago Tonight” also invited candidate and former state treasurer Alexi Giannoulias who initially accepted an invitation and then later canceled. Also on the ballot is Sidney Moore.

Last week, “Chicago Tonight” featured two Republicans vying for the post: Illinois state Rep. Dan Brady, who’s also a funeral director and former coroner, and former local and federal prosecutor John Milhiser, who has taken up teaching since his term as U.S. Attorney for the Central District of Illinois ended last year.
