Illinois Lawmakers Weigh in on Future of Abortion Access and More


The future of abortion rights has become a hot button issue nationwide ever since the leak of a Supreme Court draft that signals an overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Governor J.B. Pritzker has emphasized that Illinois will remain a safe state for people to access abortions even if federal abortion protections are removed.

“When we think about this, we have to frame it as bodily autonomy, as self-determination. It’s about privacy and choice,” said Sen. Cristina Pacione-Zayas (D-Chicago).

Rep. Thomas Morrison (R-Palatine) said there’s a disconnect between what policies Democrats are pushing on abortion and the public opinion.

According to Pew Research, 56% of Illinoisans say abortion should be legal in all or most cases. 

“What we’re doing here in Illinois is ensuring access to healthcare—abortion is healthcare,” said Rep. Ann Moeller (D-Elgin).
