City officials are planning specific routes to 19 different Chicago gas stations as businessman and former mayoral-candidate Willie Wilson plans a $1 million dollar gas giveaway Thursday morning.

The plans comes after a similar event last week snarled traffic during the morning hours around the city.

Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications and the Chicago Police Department say they’ve coordinated with Wilson and his staff, and will provide city resources “to mitigate traffic conditions and ensure public safety.”

Wilson organized a $200,000 gas giveaway last week, but without city planning. Long lines caused traffic and backups at several different locations in the city. This time around, officials are banning cars from getting in line before 7 a.m. Thursday, while designated traffic control aides will be on hand at each gas station to assist with flow and impacts from heavy traffic.

According to the city, each vehicle that gets in line will receive a sticker denoting its position in line. Drivers will be allotted $50 per car, but it’s for vehicles only — gas cans and other containers are not allowed.

The city estimates that each gas station can expect up to 400 cars per location, with the giveaway lasting around four to five hours.
