The people who lived in the former Cabrini Green public housing complex once called it home — despite its reputation for being a violent, poverty-stricken community.
When the city started its demolition in the mid ‘90s, it was also the only Black neighborhood on Chicago’s North Side.
Now, a yearlong Better Government Association investigation details the city’s failure to keep promises of jobs and housing for current and former Cabrini-Green residents.
“It’s a story of systemic failures to a whole Black community,” Alejandra Cancino, BGA reporter behind this investigation, said. “It’s really a question of, we Chicagoans, what can we do to repair the problems that we created in removing them from this neighborhood? ... It’s a question of, what are we as a city planning to do about this?”
