Chicago police are seeking the community’s help in locating the driver of a Chevrolet Malibu believed to have been involved in a fatal hit-and-run last week on the Southwest Side that killed a 48-year-old woman and a young boy.
The police department late Monday issued a community alert seeking information about the Dec. 23 incident that resulted in the deaths of Araceli Gutierrez and 12-year-old Giovanne Bucio in the Gage Park neighborhood.
According to police, at around 8:07 p.m., a black 2012 Chevrolet Malibu was heading westbound on 55th Street from Troy Street when it traveled through the intersection and struck both Gutierrez and Bucio as they were crossing the road.
That vehicle then fled the scene at a high rate of speed, according to police, without stopping or rendering aid to the victims.
Gutierrez was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital, while Bucio was transported to Comer Children’s, but both were pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner determined both died as a result of multiple injuries caused by a motor vehicle.
Police believe that after striking the victims, the vehicle — which had significant windshield damage — headed northbound on South Sawyer Avenue from 55th Street to 51st Street.
Investigators are asking residents in that area to review any home surveillance footage they may have from 8 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. on Dec 23 to see if the suspect vehicle appears.
A GoFundMe page set up to help cover funeral services for the victims has raised more than $4,000 as of Tuesday morning. The campaign, started by a woman who identified herself as Gutierrez’s niece, said the deaths are “devastating news for all families involved, and truly gut wrenching.”
Anyone with information about the vehicle is asked to contact the CPD’s Major Accident Investigation Unit at 312-745-4521.
