Candidate Q&A

What is your vision for this office?

As a full-time Cook County Commissioner, Kevin will be an independent watchdog for Cook County taxpayers. He is opposed to regressive taxes like the county soda tax and will work to rein in wasteful spending and reform county government to protect public safety, healthcare, and other essential services that protect women, families, and children without raising taxes.

What is the most pressing issue facing constituents, and how can you help address it?

As Cook County Commissioner, Kevin will ensure that constituents in the 15th district aren’t burdened by regressive taxes, and will work tirelessly to fix our broken property tax system. He will be an arduous fighter for women by protecting women’s right to choose and ensure that organizations like Planned Parenthood and critical women’s health issues receive funding. Constituents in the 15th district are concerned with public safety so Kevin will stand up to the NRA and fight for common sense measures to stop gun violence. He believes we must confront gun violence as a public health crisis and will defend Cook County’s assault weapons ban and fight to get illegal guns off our streets by licensing gun dealers and cracking down on so-called straw purchases.

Candidate Statement

Hi, I’m Kevin Morrison and I’m running for Cook County Commissioner in the 15th District against the Chair of the Illinois Republican Party. I am running because I am passionate about transforming our local government to be more inclusive, engaging and accountable to you - the people.

As your Cook County Commissioner, I will be a full-time commissioner accessible, transparent and solely accountable to you. My office will be open to hearing your concerns, issues, and ideas. When I enter the steps of the Cook County building, I will be taking you with me. You will be my advisers and conscience as I take votes on issues that directly impact you.

As a progressive Commissioner, I will be an independent watchdog for you - the Cook County taxpayers. I will oppose all regressive taxes that only burden our middle-class and I will work to rein in wasteful spending by reforming county government to protect public safety, healthcare, and other essential services that protect women, families, and children without raising taxes.

Being raised by a single mother, I have seen directly the sexism and harassment women still face. I will be a staunch advocate for women strongly supporting a woman’s right to choose and ensure that organizations like Planned Parenthood are fully funded. I am committed to ending violence against women and will stand up for survivors of domestic violence, rape, and sexual assault by working to expand and fund county programs, unlike the incumbent and reprehensible Governor.

Our County is at crossroads. I will steer us away from a financial collapse that we are headed towards, and do this by introducing legislation that generates new forms of revenue, that are not more taxes on your shoulders.  In my first 90 days in office, I will be introducing legislation that eliminates leasing agreement loopholes that allow the wealthiest corporations to skirt what is owed in property taxes, which then fall directly on our backs. Because the foundation in our economy is our small businesses, I will create incentives to invest in Cook County, like a property tax exemption on new small businesses, which would create more jobs and allow more businesses to take root in the 15th district that will boost our local economy.

At the doors, I have consistently heard that public safety is their number one concern. As your commissioner, I will be standing up to the NRA and fighting for common sense measures to stop gun violence. I believe we must confront gun violence as a public health crisis and will defend Cook County’s assault weapons ban and fight to get illegal guns off our streets by licensing gun dealers and cracking down on so-called straw purchases.

Last week, I spoke to a constituent who was unable to pay for his medication. People should not have to choose between life-saving medication or paying their bills. Healthcare is a priority and needs to be made more affordable for our middle-class families. I will fight to expand county medical care services and protect healthcare access for those who gained coverage under the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion.

We have an incredible opportunity to elect a committed and passionate commissioner that will be working for you full time. I humbly ask for your support by voting for me on November 6. The 15th district is ready and deserves real leadership accountable to you, not the special interests. For more information about my campaign please visit kevinbmorrison.com.

About Candidate Free Time

WTTW’s 2018 Voters’ Guide to the General Election is an online resource designed to inform voters about the candidates running for office in the Nov. 6 election.

Candidates were given two minutes to tell voters where they stand on the issues, why they feel they are best qualified and what they intend to do if elected or re-elected. The messages were recorded at the WTTW studios at no cost to the candidates.

The Voters’ Guide is an online version of Candidate Free Time, pioneered by WTTW in the 1992 race for U.S. Senate. This year’s Candidate Free Time is produced with and underwritten in part by the League of Women Voters of Cook County.
