The “Neighborhood Conditions for Adults with Disabilities in Chicago” report released Monday aimed to better understand the experiences and needs of Chicagoans with disabilities across neighborhoods. The report was created in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities and the Chicago Department of Public Health.

Flu activity in suburban Cook County jumped from “low” to “high” during the week ending in Dec. 20, according to health officials. Chicago’s public health department reported “high” levels of emergency department visits and hospitalizations for flu late last week.

Before testing positive for rabies, the dog was surrendered to a local rescue and euthanized after the dog had a “marked” change in behavior on Dec. 16, according to a news release.

The cases are the first to be diagnosed in Cook County since March 8, 2024, when an outbreak of measles that began in a Pilsen shelter for migrants sickened 67 people.

The cuts could force the elimination of more than 100 staff positions, Chicago officials said. 

Chicago residents struggling with mental health issues often encounter barriers to accessing traditional care like therapists or medication.

There were about five times as many emergency department visits for flu as there were for COVID-19, according to IDPH data during the week ending Jan. 25.

The screenings will take place at parks in communities where residents have some of Chicago's lowest life expectancies.

Public health officials are encouraging residents to get vaccinated as soon as possible so they can get some protection ahead of holiday gatherings.

Mayor Brandon Johnson’s spending plan for 2025 earmarks nearly $700 million for the Chicago Department of Public Health, which is charged with fighting the spread of communicable diseases, providing mental health care and ensuring the safety of food at restaurants and festivals.

At issue is the Sims Metal Management company in Pilsen, which was cited by state and federal officials for violating environmental laws. The company agreed to build new equipment to contain emissions from at the site.
