(WTTW News)
A Chicago police officer shot and injured two people early Sunday morning in Morgan Park after an officer attempting to break up a brawl was shot, CPD officials said.
Police responded just before 1 a.m. to a call of a disturbance in the 11400 block of south Davol Street and attempted to separate a 35-year-old man and an 18-year-old man who were fighting, according to a Chicago Police Department statement.
During the brawl, a gun belonging to the 35-year-old man “discharged, striking both the victim and an officer. The officer was struck in chest and was wearing a protective vest, which saved his life,” according to the CPD statement.
A second officer fired his weapon after the initial shot, hitting both the 35-year-old man and the 18-year-old man, whom CPD referred to as the victim in its statement.
Both men were taken to area hospitals in fair condition, according to CPD.
The officer who was struck was treated and released, according to CPD.
The shooting is under investigation by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, officials said.
The officers involved will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days, in accordance with department policy.
