Chicago Police Officer Shoots, Kills Person in Car That Struck Woman, Bus: CPD
(WTTW News)
A Chicago police officer shot and killed a person Monday evening in Humboldt Park after a pursuit that injured a pedestrian and damaged a CTA bus, department officials said.
Two officers suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital after the incident that began at 5:39 p.m. Monday, according to a Chicago Police Department statement.
The shooting is under investigation by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, officials said. The person who was killed has not been identified by authorities.
The incident began when officers attempted to stop a vehicle near Homan and Chicago avenues that was wanted in connection to a possible shooting that occurred earlier in the day, officials said.
It was not clear what evidence officers had that the car was stolen, or what prompted the stop.
The driver fled from officers, who pursued the car, officials said.
“The vehicle struck an adult female pedestrian in the street and continued to flee,” according to the statement from CPD. “The offender’s vehicle came to a stop after striking a CTA bus in traffic.”
The man officers were attempting to detain “struck the bus multiple times with the vehicle and struck an unmarked squad car,” according to the statement from CPD.
“As officers attempted to stop the vehicle and place the driver into custody, one officer discharged their service weapon, striking the offender,” according to the statement from CPD, which said a gun was recovered from the car.
The man suffered “multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body,” and died after being taken to a nearby hospital, according to the statement from CPD.
The woman who was struck by the car fleeing police suffered an injury to her lower body and was taken to the hospital in good condition, according to the statement from CPD.
The officers involved will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days, in accordance with department policy.
The man is the first person to be killed by a Chicago police officer in 2026. One other person was wounded by police on Jan. 24 in Grand Crossing. CPD officers shot 22 people, killing nine, in 2024, records show. In 2024, CPD officers shot 12 people, killing six, records show.
