As National Guard and Marines Deployed to Los Angeles, Chicago Anti-ICE Protest Planned Tuesday

An anti-ICE protest is scheduled for Tuesday evening in Chicago, as the city joins a handful of U.S. cities holding protests in solidarity with Los Angeles.
Marines and additional National Guard troops arrived in the Los Angeles area Tuesday after being sent by President Donald Trump in response to protests over immigration raids and despite objections from California Gov. Gavin Newsom and local leaders.
The planned protest in Chicago is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Federal Plaza.
“The people of Los Angeles and surrounding areas have taken a courageous stand against Trump’s reign of terror targeting immigrant families,” according to organizers in a social media post about the planned protest. “In response, the administration has falsely labeled those taking to the streets in protest of the brutal war on immigrants as ‘rioters’ and called in thousands of National Guard soldiers for a crackdown … But we cannot let this repression intimidate us.”
The Chicago chapter for the Party for Socialism and Liberation, Chicago Jobs with Justice, 25th Ward IPO, Chicago Religious Leadership Network on Latin America, and the Chicago chapter for the Act Now to Stop War and End Racism Coalition are among some of the organizers, according to a social media post.
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul issued a statement Tuesday in support of a lawsuit California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed against the Trump administration over its use of the National Guard.
“The administration’s actions to federalize the National Guard are inappropriate and have escalated circumstances unnecessarily in Los Angeles,” Raoul said in a statement. “President Trump has further inflamed the situation by taking the extraordinary action of ordering Marines to be deployed on American soil.”
Last week, federal immigration agents detained immigrants outside an ICE office in Chicago, which led immigrant advocates and local officials to face-off with federal agents.
