Homicides Up Slightly, Shootings Down in Chicago Through First Month of 2025: Police

Chicago saw a slight uptick in the number of homicides through the first month of 2025 compared to the same time last year, while shootings decreased slightly.

There were 38 homicides recorded throughout the city in January, an 8.6% jump over the same month in 2024, according to new data from the Chicago Police Department.

While fatal shootings increased, the number of total shootings (111) and shooting victims (130) recorded in Chicago last month were both below totals from January 2024 and both figures were the fewest since 2019.

According to the CPD, overall violent crime decreased 18% through the first month of 2025 compared to last year.

Police department data showed the number of robberies through January decreased 25% year-over-year, while robberies with a firearm dropped 35%.

There were also 48 vehicular hijackings recorded in January, which police said is a 33% decrease over the same month last year. Police this year have made 128 motor vehicle-related arrests, including 18 for felony vehicular hijacking.
