The start of a new year is always an opportunity to at least psychologically wipe the slate clean.

To kick things off in 2025 on the right foot, or even the left foot, set out on a First Day Hike at an Illinois state park.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is hosting self-guided hikes at 15 state parks on Jan. 1 as part of a nationwide movement promoted by America’s State Parks Foundation. (That’s right, if you’re spending the holidays out of state, no excuse to not hike — these are happening everywhere.)

“There’s no better way to clear your head, say goodbye to the stress of the holidays, and welcome a new year than to get outdoors for some fresh air and exercise,” said Natalie Phelps Finnie, IDNR director, in a statement.

Look for the designated check-in area at each of the participating parks. Hikers can pick up trail maps with recommended routes of varying length and difficulty. Don't forget to reward yourself with a commemorative sticker.

Here are the parks hosting First Day Hikes, starting with sites closest to Chicago. Click the links for maps and more information.
