Rather than watch it fail, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson cancels a budget vote scheduled for Friday.

“The reality is we’re very close, but we’re still not there yet,” Johnson said.

That means members of the Chicago City Council will spend the weekend in negotiations with a deal due by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, the city and state prepare to become “ground zero” for mass deportations as threatened this week by President-elect Donald Trump’s so-called border czar Tom Homan during a visit with Chicago Republicans.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker pushes back.

“We have laws that protect undocumented immigrants and I’m going to follow the law,” Pritzker said. “I’m concerned that the Trump administration and his lackeys aren’t.”

There are calls for a crackdown on unregulated synthetic marijuana products kratom and delta-8. But hemp businesses say Illinois is about to kill a flourishing industry.
