A puppet show is celebrating Dia de los Muertos, the Mexican holiday where people honor their loved ones who have died.
Traditionally, families gather in the cemetery during this celebration to welcome the souls of their loved ones. Others prepare altars known as ofrendas filled with photos, flowers, candles and sugar skulls.
“Day of the Dead LIVE!” is running Oct. 29-Nov. 1 at the Harold Washington Library. The free show will feature larger-than-life puppets, stilt-walkers, skeletons, ghosts and aerialists — plus classical music from pianist Llewellyn Sánchez Werner.
“I am bringing all this music to life but with an incredible team around me,” Sánchez Werner said. “It’s an opportunity to remember our loved ones and know their spirits are always with us.”
The show will celebrate icons like Cesar Chavez, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Emiliano Zapata and more.
“I think in this moment there’s some very strong negative feelings about immigrants, and I just want to make sure that everyone remembers that immigrants and the sharing of culture enriches all of our lives,” said Juanita Cardenas, the show’s director.
All shows will take place in the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium on the lower level of the Harold Washington Library Center:
