One person is dead and two others were injured following a traffic crash overnight in McKinley Park after Chicago police attempted to investigate two people they believed to be armed.
The crash occurred just before 2 a.m. Tuesday in the 3500 block of South Ashland Avenue.
According to a preliminary statement, members of the police department’s priority response team were on patrol near the 5500 block of South Pulaski in response to robbery reports in that area.
They saw two men entering a black Lexus sedan whom they believed to be armed, according to the statement, and as the officers attempted to investigate, the sedan allegedly “fled at a high rate of speed.”
The officers pursued and observed as the sedan continued into the 3500 block of South Ashland where it entered the intersection, collided with an SUV and crashed into a nearby building.
The passenger of the sedan was ejected and pronounced dead on scene, according to police, while the drivers of both the sedan and SUV were hospitalized with other injuries.
No officers were injured and police said two weapons were recovered from the scene.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is currently investigating the incident and the CPD said it is cooperating fully.
