An expansion of O’Hare International Airport’s Concourse C would add more gates and serve both international and domestic passengers, according to local elected officials who gathered Tuesday to unveil design renderings.

The creation of Satellite Concourse 1 would add 19 new gates and accommodate different sized aircrafts to reduce layover transfers for passengers, according to officials.

The expansion is part of a broader $8.5 billion project known as O’Hare 21; it was introduced in 2018 with the goal of expanding and renovating the airport. The plan includes the creation of two new satellite concourses, a new O’Hare Global Terminal replacing Terminal 2, and an extension of Terminal 5, which was completed early last year.

“This is a once-in-a-generation expansion,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said during a news conference Tuesday. “Investing in our airports is an investment in all of our communities.”

The design for Satellite Concourse 1 is led by Chicago architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill with Ross Barney Architects, Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects and Arup.

Work on the project began last year with construction of several temporary taxiways and the construction of three new temporary gates off Concourse C, which opened this spring, according to officials.

The development will create more than 3,800 construction jobs, officials said.

In April, local officials broke ground on a $300 million project to upgrade Terminal 3, with an expected completion date of 2027. That project is funded in part by $90 million in federal grants.

Satellite Concourse 1 is expected to be complete in 2028.
