‘A Safer City’ Community Conversation: Addressing the Root Causes of Gun Violence
In 2021, Gov. J.B. Pritzker declared gun violence a public health crisis — creating the Reimagine Public Safety Act to bring together community groups, researchers and public officials to find a collaborative approach to addressing the root causes of gun violence.
“Chicago Tonight: Latino Voices” host Joanna Hernandez on Monday moderated a community conversation with Lisa Daniels, founder of the Darren B. Easterling Center for Restorative Practices; Kathryn Bocanegra, assistant professor at UIC Jane Addams College of Social Work; and Quiwana Bell, the assistant secretary of firearm violence prevention for the state of Illinois.
The conversation took a deep dive into how supporting victims of gun violence and finding a path toward healing plays a role in ending cycles of violence.
