According to Chicago Police Department data, nine people total were shot in seven separate shootings between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

Among those victims was Huesca, 30, who was killed just before 3 a.m. Sunday. Police said officers responding to a ShotSpotter alert drove to the 3100 block of West 56th Street, where they discovered him outside with gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Mayor Brandon Johnson said he met with Huesca’s mother and uncle Sunday and “assured them that they have the full support of my administration as they deal with this unspeakable loss.”

“Our city is grieving, and our condolences go out to their entire family as well as Luis’ fellow officers and community,” Johnson said in a statement. “No family or community should ever have to suffer such pain.”

Last year, Huesca spoke during the eulogy of his friend and fellow officer Andres Vasquez Lasso, who was killed in the line of duty in March 2023.

Huesca had worked with the Chicago Police Department for six years. No one has been taken into custody in connection with his killing as of Monday morning.

Two men were also fatally shot just before 2 a.m. Saturday in the 2500 block of East 83rd Street. Police said three men were outside in that area when someone opened fire, striking each of the victims. A 43-year-old man was struck in the neck and a 36-year-old man discovered nearby was struck in the chest. Both men died on scene. The third victim was hospitalized in critical condition.

A 20-year-old woman was stabbed to death inside a home in the 7700 block of South Trumbull Avenue. Police said she was discovered inside a home in that area at around 3:45 p.m. Saturday. One person of interest has been taken into custody.
