3 People Killed by Gunfire, 2 Young Boys Wounded in Holiday Weekend Shootings Across Chicago: Police

Three people were killed by gunfire and two young boys were wounded in shootings across Chicago over the Presidents Day holiday weekend.

According to Chicago Police Department data, 19 people were injured or killed in 16 separate shootings between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Monday.

A 19-year-old man was fatally shot in the 1900 block of West Hastings Street at around 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The victim told police he’d been in a verbal altercation with a man who produced a firearm and shot him in the chest and shoulder. He was taken to a local hospital where he died of his wounds.

A 40-year-old man died after he was shot at a convenience store in the 6300 block of South Ashland Avenue at around 3 p.m. Sunday. He was inside the store when an unknown person approached and fired shots, striking him in the head. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

A 38-year-old man was killed while sitting in a parked vehicle in the 1600 block of South Trumbull Avenue at around 6:15 p.m. Monday. He was shot multiple times and later died of his wounds.

Police said two young boys, ages 12 and 14, were shot after being chased in the 7800 block of South Escanaba Avenue at around 1:45 p.m. Monday. According to police, the boys were traveling in a vehicle when a black sedan began to chase them.

An unknown offender from that sedan produced a firearm and fired shots in the direction of the victim’s vehicle, as they fled to the 7300 block of South Kenwood Avenue where they got out and ran to the 7400 block of South Kenwood.

The 12-year-old boy was shot in his stomach and was hospitalized in good condition. The 14-year-old was shot in his buttocks and was listed in serious condition.

An unknown woman was also killed in the 8200 block of South Vernon Street at 9 a.m. Sunday. Police said she was found unresponsive outside with apparent trauma to the neck area and was pronounced on scene.
