The victim — who was identified as Damien Green, according to Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office records — was one of 23 total people who were shot in 22 separate shooting incidents between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

Green was found just after 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the 6700 block of South Lowe Avenue by officers who were investigating a gunshot detection alert in the area. He was in the street and had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Police said he was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

CPD Deputy Chief Gilberto Calderon called the fatal shooting a “tragedy” and asked local residents to come forward with any information.

“We need the community to come out and help us,” he said late Sunday, adding that investigators have few details. “This is sad … that we have young kids like this not given the opportunity to become great men in our city.”

Police said a 35-year-old man was shot while in a parked car in the 800 block of West 71st Street at around 6 p.m. Saturday. He was sitting in the vehicle when he was shot in the neck by an unknown offender. The victim was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
