According to a Chicago Police Department community alert published Friday, 22 Hyundai and Kia vehicles have been stolen across the 25th police district in early 2023.

Police said suspects have gained access to the vehicles either through unlocked doors or by breaking a window, and once inside, they’re able to force open the steering column, start the vehicle and drive off.

The only vehicles involved in these thefts are ones that require a key, rather than a push button, to start the vehicle. A viral TikTok “challenge” video that shows how to hot-wire Hyundai and Kia vehicles using a USB cable has led to increased vehicle thefts in areas across the country, some police departments have reported.

Police did not provide physical descriptions of the suspects in these incidents, but said there are multiple offenders seen wearing dark clothing and face masks.
