According to Chicago police, 24 people were struck in 20 separate shootings between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

That included 5-month-old Cecilia Thomas, who died Friday after being shot in the head. Police said Thomas was riding in a vehicle in the 7700 block of South Shore Drive at around 6 p.m., when someone from inside another vehicle began firing shots.

Thomas was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital and initially reported in critical condition, but she later died. A 41-year-old man who’d been riding in another vehicle also suffered a gunshot wound to the eye area, and was hospitalized in good condition.

Police Superintendent David Brown said the city was “shocked” by the shooting.

“This is an unthinkable tragedy and we want to take just a moment to offer our deepest condolences on behalf of the Chicago Police Department to the family,” he said. “This is unacceptable and we won’t stand for it.”

Police have not yet made any arrests in this case, Brown said.

Just before 11 p.m. Friday, police located a 45-year-old man in the 10700 block of South Champlain Avenue who had been shot multiple times. He was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition and later died.

About 30 minutes later, a 21-year-old man was shot multiple times in the 9600 block of South Princeton Avenue. He too was rushed to Christ Hospital, where he died.

At around 12:40 a.m. Saturday, a 30-year-old man riding in a vehicle in the 2100 block of West 36th Street was shot multiple times by someone in another vehicle. The victim was struck in the chest and right arm, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A 33-year-old man was killed in a drive-by shooting just before 4:30 a.m. Sunday. The victim had just exited his vehicle in the 1300 block of West Roosevelt Road when someone in another vehicle opened fire, striking the victim twice in the chest.

A 17-year-old was fatally shot and another man was wounded in a shooting onboard a CTA bus just before 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The victims were riding the bus in the 300 block of South Pulaski Road when two men carrying handguns got on and walked to the back of the bus. One of those men fired shots from a handgun before fleeing on foot, according to Brown. A second suspect was armed with an AR-15, but he is not believed to have fired.

The teen was struck in the head and later died. The second victim, a 24-year-old, sustained a graze wound to the head and refused medical attention.

Brown said the shooting appeared targeted, but added that it's too soon to determine if the suspects and victims knew each other. No one is currently in custody.

A 22-year-old woman was stabbed to death just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday during an altercation in the 5200 block of South Carpenter Street. Police said the victim sustained multiple stab wounds to the chest and arms and was taken to U of C hospital in critical condition. She later died. Police arrested an offender and recovered a knife on scene.
