Activists fighting to raise awareness for missing and murdered Black women and girls in Chicago are holding a march Tuesday, June 14.
Several organizations are teaming up for the fifth annual We Walk for Her event. Organizers say they hope the walk brings a sense of urgency to the dozens of cold cases and disappearances.
“(We need) more sense of urgency from our city officials and state reps who can make the necessary changes in law so that Black and Brown women are protected, and that our communities are being (surveilled), but in a positive way so that we can keep track of who’s coming in and out of our community and then not using that surveillance to criminalize our Black and Brown women and children who may end up missing or place blame on them,” said Miracle Boyd, a youth organizer for Good Kids Mad city, and one of the original organizers of the walk.
The walk is a collaboration between several Chicago groups, including Mothers Opposed to Violence Everywhere.
“We hope to continue to bring awareness, we want to get the attention of the mayor and the governor. We want them to join our community task force. We want acknowledgement from the people that can make a difference,” said Fallon Gordon, director of Missing & Murdered Black Women and Girls for Mothers Opposed to Violence Everywhere.
The walk begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday at 35th Street and King Drive.
