Both officers were listed in fair condition after being treated at local hospitals, while the suspect’s condition was not immediately known Tuesday morning.

According to police, two tactical officers were conducting a traffic stop in the 3000 block of West Polk Street around 9:15 p.m. As they approached the vehicle on foot, the suspect allegedly drove his vehicle into the officers, pinning one of them between that vehicle and their squad car.

Police said “an exchange of gunfire ensued” and one officer and the offender were both struck. That officer was treated for a gunshot wound to the hand, while the other officer suffered an injury to the right leg.

“But for the grace of God, we’re talking about the officers having non-life threatening injuries,” Police Superintendent David Brown said Monday night.

According to police, two weapons were recovered from the suspect’s vehicle.

Both officers involved have been placed on routine administrative duty for 30 days. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is now investigating the incident.
