Chicago Digs Out From Foot of Snow, Next Comes the Sub-Zero Arctic Blast

Chicagoans continue to dig out from a weekend snowstorm that dumped a foot of the white stuff on parts of the region.

According to the National Weather Service, official totals were 10.8 inches at O’Hare Airport and 11.3 inches at Midway Airport. Romeoville, with 12.9 inches, notched the greatest snowfall.

The storm piled onto the several inches of snow dumped earlier in the week, and marked the first time since January 2014 that Chicago got hit with two 6-inch snowfalls in a seven-day period. The mountains of snow won’t have much chance to melt, with an arctic blast of bitter cold temperatures forecast for the end of the week.  

Below, the NWS details snowfall totals across the area through 9 p.m. Sunday.

The heavy, wet snow made travel hazardous, particularly on side streets and alleys. After focusing on clearing arterial roads, the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation switched over late Sunday night to plowing residential streets. People can check the status of their street via Streets and Sanitation’s online plow tracker
